The challenge for many educators is that many do not have:
- Expertise with social media tools for educational purposes
- Appropriate technical skills for the hardware or chosen Social Media Technology (SMT). This includes awareness and availability of required resources to support the seamless use of the SMT. This is commonly referred to as Information Communication Technology (ICT) competency.
- Expertise and knowledge concerning digital privacy and the law. including legislation concerning them in their geographical location and the geographical location of their students.
- Practical expertise in protecting themselves and others in a digital environment.
- Personal expertise.
- The training to educate students to be digitally literate.
- A strategic plan for choosing and implementing a social media strategy. This plan should include how to get buy-in from stakeholders including students, other faculty, administrators and parents. It would also include information and tiered training plan for all stakeholders.
